Update: 2015 Ends

So hi there. It's been almost 3 years since I last updated this blog! As a result the current post which people are first brought to is a bit dated. So here's a new fresh post, just for you special special people who are somehow finding a blog which has been dead for three years.

So essentially everything's changed since I abandoned you dear blog. I've come out as trans and began my transition is essentially the big news but I've also done so many things I'd never have expected to do and met so many amazing people.

I don't want to get to emotional or over the top in this post. But 2015 has been a very interesting year and it would seem remiss to not post something here before the year ends. I may end up turning this into a rant space about trans and human rights issues if I have the energy. But for now enjoy my terrible teenage writing and some pictures from the last few year.

Hey there !

Hi guys,

I know I haven't written on this in AGES but in my defence I have a pretty good reason. Firstly my internet was gone for 3 months and by the time it came back I was too busy settling in to college and living in Dublin to actually write anything worthwhile.

So why am I writing now ? For no reason to be honest ! Just a quick hi. So hi how's everyone ? I'm good. Just started my second semester in college (I'm studying event management in DIT) and I'm really enjoying living in Dublin.

Nothing else is new to be honest. My obsession with attending gigs is escalating though ! At the moment I really REALLY wanna go see so many people including Ellie Goulding, Lana Del Rey, P!nk, Gabriella Alpin, Janet Devlin and SO MANY OTHERS !! :'(

But I'm happy, that's the most important thing ! So thank you ! :P

Lots of love,

Toryn xXxXx

Our Heros !

So in this big, bad, modern world are there any heroes left ?? Is there anyone to look up to ??? Through history there has been many like Countess Markievicz, Oscar Wilde, Anne Frank, Mahatma Gandhi, Bette Davis and Freddie Mercury but in today's overly commercial world is there any truly inspirational people left ?? Who can inspire us today ?? I think there is and here is my list of the top 4 most inspirational people of our day and age:

1. P!nk: Many may disagree with me but I do genuinely feel that Ms Moore is such an inspiration for today's youth. P!nk doesn't sing about how cool her rich boyfriend is, she sings about how boring he is, P!nk doesn't sing about shopping and her partying, she sings about the need for people to love themselves. P!nk has always been the different child in the family of super stardom. She wasn't another Beyonce, another Britney Spears or another Christina Aguilera she was P!nk and her fans love her for that. As long as P!nk stays pink she'll always be loved and will be an inspiration for anyone different and anyone who worries for the future of society.

2. Meryl Streep: Many of you may argue that Meryl doesn't belong on this list due to her age but I have to disagree. For nearly four decades she has been dominating Hollywood and she has never been anything but humble about it. Meryl may not particularly teach us how to love ourselves like P!nk but I think she teaches us to love the world around us and to always be humble. I think this was most obvious when won the Oscar for Leading actress this year. In her speech Meryl said:

"I really understand I'll never be up here again. I really want to thank all my colleagues, all my friends. I look out here and I see my life before my eyes. My old friends, my new friends. Really, this is such a great honour, but the thing that counts the most with me, is the friendships and the love and the sheer joy we have shared making movies together. My friends, thank you all of you, departed and here, for this inexplicably wonderful career. Thank you so much"

If that does not teach us all something about modesty and how we should treat others I don't know what does.

 3. Mary Robinson: Mary Robinson is in my opinion one of the most inspirational Irish politicians in the history of our great state !! Many may feel that Ms Robinson has not really done much other than holding the position of president but those people are ignorant and uneducated !!! (No offence to anyone .... except the idiots :P). Ms Robinson is not just an ex president she is a warrior. Ms Robinson has helped Senator David Norris fight for gay rights, has been the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, has been Chancellor of Trinity College, has set up or helped set up a million organisations such as the Council of Women World Leaders and most impressively has been a member of The Elders a group of retired but extremely influential politicians such as Nelson Mandela and Aung San Suu Kyi who try and change the world. If I haven't given enough reasons to find Ms Robinson inspirational then I genuinely don't know what else I can do !!! :P

4. Anne Hathaway: Anne and I go WAY back. I have loved Ms Hathaway since I was 7 or 8 and I have followed her career religiously since then. I find Anne is just filled with such beauty, kindness and humanity that it surprises me that anyone can find reason not to like her. I remember the first time I watched Rachel Getting Married for the first time two and a half year ago and just crying because Anne's performance was just so beautiful. And this is not the only time she's made me cry with her beauty. I know I've already used this quote in my blog post Love is a human experience but frankly my dear I don't give a damn !!! :P

"In my household, being gay was, and is, no big deal. When my brother came out, we hugged him, said we loved him and that was that. Just for the record, we don’t feel that there is actually anything alternative about our family values. I don’t consider myself just an ally to the LGBT community, I consider myself your family. If anyone, ever, tries to hurt you, I’m going to give them hell. There are people who’ve said that I’m being brave for being openly supportive of gay marriage and gay adoption. With all due respect, I’m humbly decent. I’m not being brave, I’m being a decent human being. Love is a human experience, not a political statement"

If that is not a woman who is inspirational then I'm not sure that one exists !!!

I must apologise for the prejudice in this post. I know that all of my modern inspirations are women but as a feminist I find myself always falling for the heroine so I was bound to find women inspirational over men. Sorry !!! :P

Beauty is in you know who's eye.

Ok so if I sound mad please just ignore me. I'm sitting here on my laptop listening to Christina Perri at 2.30 in the morning and I just had a thought, this blog has been viewed over 1300 times and I want to know what makes you people tick.

I feel like crying and I'm not sure why, so I'm going to ask you all a big favour ..... send me beautiful pictures, pictures that make you happy, pictures that make you cry, pictures that inspire you, or a picture that just makes you feel. I know its a really weird request and I'm not sure what I'll do with the pictures but I want them. I want to know the people still have joy and beauty in them..

Here are some images I find beautiful:

While I know I genuinely sound like I've cracked I promise you all I haven't. So please send me your pictures. You can tell me why you sent them, what they mean to you or nothing at all:

You can comment bellow, email me at torynglavin@gmail.com or tweet them to me at @torynglavin. Thank you, you beautiful people !

Mariella's got another secret !!

Ok so as you may have guessed this is ANOTHER post about Kate Nash !! The first one -----> Mariella Has a Secret -----> was about Kate in general, this one is about the impact going to see her in Whelans this week had on me !!!!!! :D She really was amazing :D
A fan picture from the gig with the dress :D

So first a little about the tour, the tour is one of the most unusual I have ever been to, named the Faster Pussycats ! Run Run 2012, it is not really in support of any current album but is instead to test out a new genre and style that Kate has been working on. I discussed in my blog --->  Serious blog 2: A dangerous weapon :( ---> Kate's sudden change in appearance but I didn't mention her change in music. Kate, in my opinion, is no longer our little pop indie queen but is now a punk rock princess who has, as some unimaginative critic said, "commit career suicide".

It seem impossible to me that a singer/songwriter can commit "career suicide" by singing and writing songs !! Perhaps if she said her fans were stupid, it would have been career suicide, perhaps if she had become an investment banker, it would have been career suicide, but writing music under another style is not career suicide. Its brave.

The tour poster !
Another big impact the beautiful Ms Nash had on me was she made me feel so FREE :D Kate between each song would share so much of her thoughts. She made me particularly proud to be gay as she spoke about the LGBT community. She's also such an amazing spokes-woman for anyone who needs a voice in society, and her feminist views are AMAZING, as she talked about her all girl band and how she should not be questioned on having one at the gig.

My 5 highlights from the gig are:

1. The fact she came on stage in a wedding dress as a tribute to her cousin, I think, who is getting married soon. Honestly people, have you ever been to a gig where the artist came on stage in a vintage wedding dress ??? Anyone ???

2. The bras, THE BRAS !! It was hilarious to watch Kate being buried under a pile of fans bras as the flew at her from all directions. Also..... THE CHEEK OF THEM TO ASK FOR THEIR BRAS BACK !!!!!! :O

That dress again !
3. The fact that she was so outspoken about gay rights, women's rights and general human rights. She could be the next Gandhi !!!! :P PS. I wanna join her gang !!!!! :D

4. Lullaby for an insomniac. I really hope this song is on her next album because it really was so beautiful that I have to listen to it again. Also the fact it took FOREVER to get us all to shut up so she could perform it accapella was pretty funny !!!! :P

5. HER !!!

So after this ... passionate post I assume you will all run out to buy tickets for the next time she's in Dublin (or your local area) because she is just AMAZING.

And one last thing ..... THANK YOU KATE :D You rock ! :)
